Safety Training

Online Safety Training 

Welcome to the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies safety training program.  The safety training program is designed to meet the needs of each employee, volunteer, intern or visitor at Cary Institute for greater than 2 weeks  (or 10 business days). All safety modules must be completed within your first two weeks with Cary Institute. However, prior to starting a specific job you must first complete the safety training module required for that task (for example: prior to lifting heavy boxes you are required to complete back safety).  

First time employees, volunteers, interns or visitors to the property will be asked to take a safety tour of the main facility and/or the primary facility they will be occupying.  The Safety Officer will coordinate all safety tours via email. 

Annual online safety training takes place from October 15th to December 15th of each year.  If your initial start date is prior to April 15th, you will be expected to retrain during this time period. The annual training is a subset of the initial training modules based on the regulatory agency's requirements.

How to log into eSafety

1. Open the Cary Okta Portal: https://caryinstitute.okta.com

2. Sign in with your Cary Institute account username (LastNameFirstInitial) and password

3. click the eSafety card to log in

4. Click LOGIN

3. Enter Your information to log in 

   1. Assigned ID -  caryinstitute

   2. Username - your full cary institute email address (i.e. LastNameFirstInitial@caryinstitute.org) or the email address you provided on the notice of visitor form. 

   3. Password - training (you may change this password as soon as you log in. Password requirements are 8 characters long) 

   4. Click on the green login box

4. You will be taken to your Dashboard.  Here you will see three labels at the top 

   1. Dashboard - you main page

   2. Library - a listing of the safety courses assigned to you with their due dates

   3. Records - you can see your past completed courses

5. To start your training you can start your course in one of two ways 

   1. Click the start button on a course in your My Top To Dos (found on your dashboard)

   2. Click the start button on a course in your library 

6. There are two different types of course 

   1. One which Esafety has created 

      1. Once you click start the course will start. If you need to pause, stop, fast forward rewind you may click on the buttons on the lower left side of the screen. 

      2. During the course you may have questions to answers please answer them 

      3. At the end of the course you will have a test.  Please complete the test. 

      4. Once you have completed the test you will be redirected to the dashboard

   2. One which is a Cary specific document

      1. Once you click start you will be taken to a screen that says Custom Course File (titled XXX) click view file this will open a new tab and open up a Cary Institute Policy. Please read the policy. 

      2. Return to the original tab and click the take the test.  Answer the questions and submit the test. 

7. Complete all courses in your list with this year's designation. 

Hands on Safety Training 

Dependent upon your individual tasks, you may be asked to complete additional training. All training will be recorded with the Safety Officer. 

Additional Safety Training 

Other additional trainings which are not addressed in eSafety but are required for a specific task, permit, or compliance the Safety Officer will either assist in finding the correct training or provide additional training through other online platforms or with outside trainers. 

A few examples are : IATA and DOT shipping hazardous materials, First AID, AED/CPR, RCRA, SPCC, Hazwoper and others.  

Compressed Gas Training - Requires on online course with Esafety,  hands-on training, and viewing this compressed gas video.
